Deceased Name: PAUL L. WITKINLAWYER, ACTIVE IN CIVIC AFFAIRS PAUL L. WITKIN, 84, OF NORTH 34TH STREET, DIED THURSDAY,
JUNE 28, 2001, IN MILLER-DWAN MEDICAL CENTER, DULUTH. HE WAS BORN MAY 26, 1917, IN SUPERIOR AND WAS A LIFELONG
CITY RESIDENT. HE GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN LAW SCHOOL IN
1942 AND WAS A WORLD WAR II VETERAN, HAVING SERVED WITH THE U.S. MARINE CORPS.
He had practiced law in Superior since 1942 and was a
member of the former law firm of Witkin, Till, Lucci and Bick. Mr. Witkin was licensed to practice law in the Supreme
Court of Wisconsin, Western District of Wisconsin Federal Court, Federal
Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court. He was an active member of the community for many years.
His past and present activities included: president of the Chamber of
Commerce, charter member of the Optimist Club, chairman of the Boy Scout
Campaign, chairman of St. Mary's Hospital Lay Board, chairman of Superior
Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, chairman of the Red Cross campaign,
president of the Douglas County Bar Association, president of the Wisconsin
Alumni Association, a director of the former Temple Beth El and a director of
Phoenix Villa. He was a member of the Douglas County Development
Association, Superior Kiwanis, Superior Elks Lodge, Superior Masonic Lodge
236, Eau Claire Consistory, Aad Temple Shrine and Superior Shrine Club. Mr. Witkin served as director of the UWS Foundation, was a
member of the Catholic Charities board of directors, was a director of
Lakehead Pipe Line Co. and Lakehead Construction and a member of Temple
Israel in Duluth. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy. He is survived by a son, Michael H. (Cynthia), St. Paul,
Minn.; two daughters, Roberta (Stephen) of Sacramento, Calif., and Deborah
(Israel) of Hamden, Conn.; a sister, Shirley Sigler, Duluth; a brother,
Harold (Shirley), Superior; five grandchildren; and several nieces and
nephews. Service: 1 p.m. Sunday in Downs Funeral Home. Rabbi Amy
Bernstein officiating. Interment in the family lot in the Superior Hebrew
Cemetery. Should friends desire, memorials may be made to a charity of the
donor's choice. Pallbearers will be sons-in-law Stephen Gould and Israel
Ortiz; daughter-in-law Cynthia Ross; and grandchildren David Gould, Allen
Witkin, Elizabeth Gould, Janine Lipsky and Justin Lipsky. Honorary
pallbearers will be Getchell Widdes, William Goligoski, Wesley Harkins, Byron
